What's the difference between water and oil-based paint?

Oil or solvent based paints last longer than water-based paints. Our oil-based paint is an alkyd paint, which means it uses a synthetic resin as its binder. Although it is synthetic, it is actually less hazardous to the environment than other binders.

One benefit of alkyd paints over water-based paint is that water-based paints need to be protected from freezing. For people in colder areas, oil-based paints may be preferred because it won't freeze and is more flexible when it comes to application temperatures.

However, there are some states and municipalities that ban the use of oil-based paint on roads and parking lots. If you're operating in one of these areas, you are forced into using water-based paint. Water-based paint isn't as hazardous to the environment as solvent-based paint, and it's less expensive. You don't have to invest in any paint thinners, as water-based paint can be cleaned off easily with water.

  • Use PPS's oil-based parking lot paint for any lines or markings that are trafficked frequently.

  • Ensure your surface is clean and dry before painting. If using on an area that's been painted previously, remove loose paint by using a stiff-bristled broom or power washer. This is especially important if the previous paint was water-based, because the oil-based paint will not stick to areas previously painted with water-based paint!

  • Apply the paint at temperatures of 50°F or more.

  • If using on new concrete, the concrete must be cured for a minimum of 30 days before painting.

  • Can be combined with reflective glass beads to increase overall visibility of painted areas.

  • Yields 320 linear feet per gallon, and 1,600 linear feet per 5-gallon pail.
